A Checklist for Booking Early, Preparing Vaccinations, and Ensuring a Stress-Free Stay.
Easter, Mother’s Day, and Memorial Day are coming fast, and that means two things: family gatherings and travel plans. While you’re busy packing suitcases and double-checking flight times, don’t forget about your best canine friend!
Unfortunately boarding your dog isn’t as simple as dropping them off and waving goodbye. A little prep work can go a long way in ensuring your pup has a stress-free stay, so you can better enjoy your trip.
If you want to avoid last-minute panic and ensure your dog has the best boarding experience possible, follow this simple checklist.
Because nothing says “what a disaster” like realizing your dog isn’t up to date on vaccinations the day before you leave.
1. Book Early – Boarding Facilities Fill Up FAST!
If you’re the kind of person who waits until the last minute to do everything, let this be your wake-up call: boarding facilities book up quickly during holidays.
Just like you, other pet parents are making travel plans and need a safe place for their dogs. If you wait too long, you may find yourself out of options.
As soon as you finalize your travel plans, book your dog’s stay.
2. Get Vaccines Early.
Most reputable boarding facilities require up-to-date vaccinations like Bordetella (kennel cough), Rabies, and Distemper/Parvo. And before you think, oh, I’ll just get those done the day before drop-off, think again. Some vaccines take weeks to become fully effective. That means if you procrastinate, your dog might not be eligible for boarding.
Schedule a vet visit at least a month before your trip to make sure your dog is fully protected. This not only keeps your pup safe but also ensures they’re not bringing home any unwanted surprises.
3. Pack Plenty of Food. Now is NOT Time for a Diet Change!
Your dog’s stomach is a delicate ecosystem. The last thing you want is to switch up their food right before boarding and have them dealing with tummy troubles in an unfamiliar place. Keep their meals consistent to avoid any unnecessary stress (for them AND the boarding staff).
Also, pack extra food! Delays happen, flights get canceled, and sometimes, you just need an extra day before picking them up. Having additional food on hand ensures your dog doesn’t run out of their usual diet.
4. Make Sure Their Collar Fits Securely.
No one wants to get a call that their dog slipped out of their collar during play or potty time.
A properly fitted collar is essential for safety. If it’s too loose, your pup could easily back out of it. If it’s too tight, it could be uncomfortable. Double-check that their collar is snug but not restrictive.
5. Do a Trial Run Before the Big Stay.
If your dog has never boarded before (or it’s been a while), consider a trial run. A short overnight stay before your big trip can help them get used to the new environment, the staff, and the routine.
Think of it as a puppy dress rehearsal that could help avoid setting your dog up for separation anxiety.
A trial run helps ease their nerves, making the longer stay much less stressful.
6. Bring Comfort Items from Home.
Imagine being dropped off at a hotel with no familiar pillows, no favorite pajamas, or your smartphone. That’s how your dog might feel when they board without familiar comforts.
Some facilities allow you to bring a favorite toy, blanket, or even an old T-shirt with your scent to help soothe your pup while you’re away. These items can make their kennel feel more like home, reducing stress and anxiety.
Check with your boarding facility first, as some may have policies about personal items.
7. Provide Clear Instructions About Medications or Special Needs.
If your dog takes daily meds or has special dietary requirements, write dosages, timing, and any special instructions down for the facility. And make sure you put everything in clearly labeled containers.
A busy boarding staff will appreciate your attention to detail, and your pup will get exactly what they need without any confusion.
8. Update Emergency Contacts.
Just like you wouldn’t travel without leaving an emergency contact for your house or kids, you should do the same for your dog.
Make sure the boarding facility has a reliable local contact who can pick up your pup in case of an emergency. Also, double-check that they have your vet’s up-to-date contact information.
Because the last thing you want is for a minor issue to turn into a major headache simply because no one could reach you while you were away.
9. Keep Goodbyes Short and Sweet.
As dog owners ourselves, we get it. You love your dog. But making a big, emotional goodbye scene at drop-off only makes it harder for them (and for you).
Instead of long hugs and tearful goodbyes, stay upbeat and confident. Dogs pick up on your emotions, so if you act like everything is fine, they’ll be more likely to feel the same way, making the transition less frightening for them.
10. Plan for a Post-Boarding Transition.
Your dog has just had their version of a vacation. New smells, new friends, new experiences. When they come home, they might be a little extra tired or even a bit out of routine.
Give them time to rest, rehydrate, and readjust. Some dogs might sleep more than usual after an exciting stay, while others might be extra clingy. This is totally normal.
Keep their routine consistent, and they’ll be back to their usual selves in no time.
Final Thoughts
A little preparation goes a long way in making your dog’s boarding experience smooth, stress-free, and even enjoyable. By planning ahead, getting their vaccinations in order, and packing everything they need, you can ensure they have a fantastic stay while you enjoy your trip.
So go ahead…book that flight, celebrate that family gathering, and travel without worry knowing your dog is feeling right at home in a safe and loving environment!
